Rob Douglas is a nationally recognized identity theft expert and information security consultant specializing in the investigation and prevention of identity theft. He is one of the nation’s leading authorities on the use of social engineering and pretext to steal personal information. Rob has been designated a Certified Identity Theft Risk Management Specialist (CITRMS) by the Institute of Consumer Financial Education.
Rob has provided consultation and expert testimony for civil and criminal investigations involving identity theft brought by private parties, state and federal law enforcement agencies. He served as a consultant and expert witness for the Federal Trade Commission in the design and execution of Operation Detect Pretext – a sting operation to catch and prosecute information thieves working in the underground information industry. Rob served as an expert witness to the Florida Statewide Grand Jury on Identity Theft and as a consultant and expert witness in Remsburg v. Docusearch, Inc., a federal suit involving the murder of Amy Boyer by a stalker who purchased her personal information from an Internet information broker.
Rob has testified about identity crimes – including homeland security implications – before the United States Congress on numerous occasions. Rob’s investigations and testimony have led to passage of numerous state and federal laws designed to protect consumer records from identity and information thieves. He has served as a consultant to Congress twice during investigations of information brokers stealing and selling proprietary financial and telecommunications records. Those investigations resulted in the exposure and prosecution of numerous information thieves.
Currently, Rob’s work is focused on editing www.IdentityTheft.info and providing informative and entertaining presentations about identity theft. He also provides consultation to the private and public sectors on issues involving all aspects of identity fraud and information security. Over the last decade, Rob has assisted the financial services sector, the telecommunications industry, the general business community, government and law enforcement agencies to better understand the scope and methodology of identity crimes through presentations, educational materials, auditing and consultation.
Prior to his work as an identity theft expert consultant, Rob was a Washington, D.C. private detective specializing in criminal investigation. His cases included dozens of murders, international terrorism (conspiracy to murder U.S. nationals and hijacking), political corruption, and government fraud. Rob was twice appointed by the U.S. District Court for Washington, D.C. to serve as criminal defense investigator in matters involving international terrorism by members of Islamic terrorist organizations.
Rob is the author of a number of training guides including: “Privacy and Customer Information Security – An Employee Awareness Guide” and “Spotting and Avoiding Pretext Calls” which was distributed to all members of the American Bankers Association.
